 Back   BREAST CANCER

Valentina Guarneri, PierFranco Conte
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 645-656; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0078
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This review contextualizes the data from clinical trials of metastatic breast cancer into different clinical scenarios of metastatic disease, taking into account the molecular subtype and prior adjuvant treatments. Increasingly, the more efficacious agents have been progressively incorporated into adjuvant treatment, making the optimal therapeutic strategy for patients with metastatic disease largely based on prior exposure to adjuvant therapies.

Back   CLINICAL GENETICS AND GENETIC COUNSELING
Sevtap Savas, Geoffrey Liu
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 657-666; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0042
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF] CME

SUMMARY: This review summarizes the current knowledge on how candidate genes and genetic variations are selected to evaluate gene–outcome, gene–prognosis, and gene–treatment response relationships as applicable to the practicing oncologist.

 Back   CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
Deric L. Wheeler, Mari Iida, Emily F. Dunn
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 667-678; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0009
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This review discusses the role of Src family kinases in solid tumors and the recent therapeutic advances aimed at targeting this family of tyrosine kinases in cancer.

 Methylnaltrexone
Jeroen J.M.A. Hendrikx, Jos H. Beijnen, Jan H.M. Schellens
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 679-682; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0049
[Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This article provides a brief summary of the use of methylnaltrexone for opioid-induced constipation in patients with advanced illness receiving palliative care when the response to laxatives is insufficient.

 Back   GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY
C. William Helm
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 683-694; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2008-0275
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This article reviews the current literature and discusses the possible role for hyperthermic i.p. chemotherapy in epithelial ovarian cancer at significant natural history time points: front line, at the time of interval debulking, in consolidation, and for recurrent disease. Further research is needed, but this technique could sensibly be researched at all the natural history time points of this disease.

Oliver Zivanovic, Fady Khoury-Collado, Nadeem R. Abu-Rustum, Mary L. Gemignani
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 695-705; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0075
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This review examines the body of literature related to gynecologic cancer malignancies and sentinel lymph node biopsy.

Susana Banerjee, Martin Gore
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 706-716; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0013
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This article reviews the various targeted therapeutic approaches under clinical investigation in ovarian cancer and the challenges facing their future success in the clinic.

Sadhna R. Vora, Hui Zheng, Zsofia K. Stadler, Charles S. Fuchs, Andrew X. Zhu
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 717-725; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0038
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This study evaluated the role of serum {alpha}-fetoprotein as a marker for treatment response in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma receiving systemic therapy using a retrospective analysis of patients enrolled in five phase II clinical trials. The study found that serum {alpha}-fetoprotein change during treatment may serve as a useful surrogate marker for clinical outcome in these patients.

 Back   LYMPHOMA
Matthew Foster, Don A. Gabriel, Thomas Shea
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 726-738; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0045

Oriental Poppy by Bernique Longley.

Laudanum, or tincture of opium, was for many decades the only "treatment" for cancer in the Old West; the Oriental Poppy has, therefore, been chosen as the journal's icon.
