 Back   BREAST CANCER

Danny Robson, Sunil Verma
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 950-958; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2008-0070
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: The article reviews the literature reporting the efficacy and toxicity of adjuvant anthracycline (doxorubicin and epirubicin) therapy for early-stage invasive breast cancer and summarizes the progress toward molecular predictive markers of anthracycline efficacy. The newer nonanthracycline regimens and their relative merits are also discussed.

Commentary: Anthracyclines in Early-Stage Breast Cancer: Is It the End of an Era?
Kathleen I. Pritchard
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 959-962; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0219
[Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: The author argues for the view that the clinical role of the anthracyclines will persist in the adjuvant therapy of breast cancer for some time to come.

 Back   GASTROINTESTINAL CANCER
Nevena Damjanov, Jared Weiss, Daniel G. Haller
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 963-969; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0022
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF] OPEN ACCESS ARTICLE

SUMMARY: This review article discusses bias in previous retrospective studies that showed extended life span of patients who undergo resection of the primary tumor and concludes that asymptomatic patients with metastatic colorectal cancer do not routinely need to undergo such resection.

Richard M. Goldberg, Daniel J. Sargent, Roscoe F. Morton, Erin Green, Hanna K. Sanoff, Howard McLeod, Jan Buckner
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 970-978; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0175
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This review summarizes the history and major findings of the N9741 clinical trial in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, which has helped to change the standard of care for this disease in the U.S. and worldwide.

 Back   GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY
Stephan Polterauer, Christoph Grimm, Veronika Seebacher, Nicole Concin, Christian Marth, Caroline Tomovski, Heinrich Husslein, Heinz Leipold, Katrin Hefler-Frischmuth, Clemens Tempfer, Alexander Reinthaller, Lukas Hefler
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 979-985; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0079
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF] CME

SUMMARY: This study evaluated the prognostic value of pretherapeutic plasma fibrinogen levels in a large multicenter series of patients with epithelial ovarian cancer. Elevated plasma fibrinogen levels were significantly associated with advanced tumor stage and the presence of a postoperative residual tumor mass, but not with histological grade and type. Higher plasma fibrinogen levels were associated with impaired disease-free and overall survival.

 Back   LUNG CANCER
Jane L. Hurwitz, Francis McCoy, Paula Scullin, Dean A. Fennell
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 986-994; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0026
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF] OPEN ACCESS ARTICLE

SUMMARY: The article reviews the current evidence for the use of second-line cytotoxic therapy and also the emerging role of novel agents and targeted therapies in the second-line treatment of small cell lung cancer.

 Back   MELANOMA AND CUTANEOUS MALIGNANCIES
David R. Minor, Dan Moore, Christine Kim, Mohammed Kashani-Sabet, Suraj S. Venna, Wei Wang, Peter Boasberg, Steven O'Day
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 995-1002; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0083
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This study examines prognostic factors in metastatic melanoma patients treated with biochemotherapy to determine which patients might benefit from this intensive therapy. Results suggest that patients who have either a normal lactate dehydrogenase level or skin or nodes as one of their metastatic sites may have durable remissions with this therapy.

 Back   SARCOMAS
Scott M. Schuetze, Shreyaskumar Patel
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 1003-1012; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0007
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF] CME

SUMMARY: The authors argue in favor of the use of chemotherapy in the management of high-risk, localized, soft tissue sarcoma.

Jean-Yves Blay, Axel Le Cesne
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 1013-1020; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0126
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: The authors argue that adjuvant chemotherapy has not been proven to improve outcome in soft tissue sarcoma patients.

Jonathan Landa, Lawrence H. Schwartz
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 1021-1038; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0194
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF] CME

SUMMARY: This article discusses various imaging techniques used in the evaluation of both bone and soft tissue sarcomas.

Back   SYMPTOM MANAGEMENT AND SUPPORTIVE CARE
Shirley H. Bush, Eduardo Bruera

Oriental Poppy by Bernique Longley.

Laudanum, or tincture of opium, was for many decades the only "treatment" for cancer in the Old West; the Oriental Poppy has, therefore, been chosen as the journal's icon.
