In just five years, The Oncologist has become one of the most important physician-reviewed providers of relevant cancer medicine information. In fact, The Oncologist has become one of the world's most widely read cancer journals with more than 19,000 readers of its English and Spanish print editions. Even more astounding are the more than 40,000 physicians who monthly visit The Oncologist Online (www.TheOncologist.com)—yes, more than 40,000 each month.

The prominence of The Oncologist is, of course, the result of many factors, among them the mission to bring relevant information on the multi-modality practice of oncology to practitioners who are community based. Papers are, therefore, carefully selected and edited to provide you, our readers, with perspectives that are authoritative and relevant. The selection of these papers, in fact, the entire tone and tempo of the journal are set and carefully maintained by our Editorial Board. On behalf of the Senior Editors, I am pleased to welcome the following new members to The Oncologist's Editorial Board: Joseph R. Bertino, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; Susan Blaney, Texas Children's Cancer Center; Howard Fine, National Cancer Institute; F. Anthony Greco, Sarah Cannon Cancer Center; Jayne S. Gurtler, Louisiana State University School of Medicine; Christian Herfarth, University of Heidelberg; Dwight Kaufman, The Jackson Clinic; Thomas J. Lynch, Jr., Massachusetts General Hospital; Patrick Remington, University of Wisconsin; Nagahiro Saijo, National Cancer Center Hospital, Tokyo; Jan H.M. Schellens, The Netherlands Cancer Institute; Richard L. Schilsky, University of Chicago; and Jaap Verweij, Rotterdam Cancer Institute and University Hospital.

We gratefully acknowledge those who have concluded their tour of duty on the editorial board. We are especially grateful to Peter M. Schlag, a Founding Editor who is internationally recognized for his expertise in surgical oncology. As he retires from the editorial board, we salute him for his support and leadership during the Journal's first five formative years.

You may well ask what is in the Journal's future. The Senior Editors whose ranks were strengthened earlier this year by Raphael E. Pollock [1] plan to increase the utility of the Journal's Website by adding, after careful review, additional materials of particular relevance to its global readership. The Editors continue to seek what is new and important, recruiting key opinion leaders to author manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication consideration. They identify current controversies and seek to report on them in a fair and balanced fashion. The journal has also embarked upon an ambitious identification of key topics that warrant coverage in greater depth. The first two of these freestanding Journal supplements have recently been published to widespread acclaim. They are:

1. Translational Research: The Role of VEGF in Tumor Angiogenesis; and
   
2. Radiation Therapy, Anemia, and Outcomes: Current Concepts, Future Strategies.
   

The Journal's success is derived from the leadership of our Senior Editors. Realizing the great power and responsibilities of editorship, they daily rise to their tasks with a sense of dedication that makes it a joy to be in their association. They keep the journal on course, not allowing it to stray from the mission upon which we originally embarked.

Our greatest appreciation is reserved for cancer patients and you, our readers. It is, after all, for them and for you that we dedicate ourselves and The Oncologist.
