Garden spaces are increasingly recognized as important places for reflection and psychological and emotional respite for patients and families experiencing the stresses of evaluation and treatment for cancer. One cancer center in Boston has evaluated comments of visitors to a Healing Garden on the roof of its new outpatient facility. The analysis, which shows an overwhelmingly positive response, is available online ("Holistic Oncology: A Healing Garden Guest Book," by Sarah E. Belden, William U. Shipley, Jensie Shipley, Katie D. Binda, Richard T. Penson, http://theoncologist.alphamedpress.org/cgi/content/full/13/7/828/DC1, and may be of interest to other centers considering the construction of such a space for their patients.
