In the April 2008 issue of The Oncologist, we published,
“Commentary:
Lung Cancer Screening — Progress or Peril,” authored by James
L. Mulshine [1].
Since its publication, we have been informed that the data of P.M. McMahon,
C.Y. Kong, B.E. Johnson, et al., “Estimating
Long-term Effectiveness of Lung Cancer Screening in the Mayo CT Screening Study,”
(reference #30 in Mulshine’s paper [1]),
were obtained from an accepted paper that has recently published by the journal
Radiology. These data of McMahon, et al., were quoted extensively
by Mulshine without either the knowledge or the permission of the authors of
that primary paper.
We have requested an explanation from Dr. Mulshine and concomitantly publish
this Editorial Expression of Concern. Further editorial
action(s) may be taken, as warranted.
The article by McMahon, et al., published online ahead of print, May 5, 2008,
in the journal Radiology.
